Mary-Rane – Raleigh Newborn Photos by Melissa Berg

I love being the go-to photographer for Raleigh Newborn Photos!!!  I adore photographing newborn babies in my professional home studio and truly enjoy cuddling sweet babies into the sweet poses you see in my work!  Photographing babies is truly my passion and I love the creating timeless memorable images for families.  Newborn photography is so special!  There really is nothing like it!  The focus of my photography is to truly capture the tiny details of your baby while making them the star of the photograph!  You’ll never see big clunky outfits or huge headbands in my work because I don’t want anything to overshadow the beauty of your baby.  Simple and classic is my favorite way to capture a brand new baby.  I strive to offer the highest quality portraits while coupling that with the best customer service in our area!

I used to be an all-inclusive photographer but I really missed that viewing and ordering appointment.  Those appointments together with my clients were so heartwarming and I loved getting to see my babies a week or two later – they all grew SO much and my clients (if they hadn’t realized it before) really got why we have to photograph babies before 2 weeks!  They change SO fast…and sometimes moms and dads even say how different they look just a short few weeks later.  You can imagine at that point how emotional seeing their slideshow for the first time can be!!!  I cry along with my clients because it makes me so happy to see how thrilled they are…and so thankful that they took the time and invested in newborn portraits with me.  Most of my clients want the digitals and I happily offer them either alone or with boutique keepsake items in a collection that you are sure to treasure forever.

Sweet Mary-Rane is the baby sister of THREE boys!! :)  I know her family was so excited to welcome her into their lives.  She is sure to be spoiled and forever protected by their love.  It was such an honor to capture her raleigh newborn photos in my studio and I hope I get to see her again soon and capture her first year of life.

Perry’s Cake Smash – Raleigh Cake Smash Photographer

I absolutely love being a Raleigh Cake Smash Photographer!  Such a fun and unique way to celebrate and remember baby’s 1st birthday! :)

Perry was an absolute doll for her session!!  We always grab the milestone portion first of course so that baby stays clean for 1-2 outfit changes.  We incorporate some of my studio props into the session for some fun!  Then we do the cake smash last for easier cleanup (it also saves a bunch of time!).  I have partnered with a local baker who delivers your custom cake to the studio before your session.  This is a great service so that you don’t have to worry about transporting a cake (and possibly ruining it on the way to the session!).  I love making things easier for my clients so I’m so grateful to have this partnership.  Sarah’s cakes from Batter Bowl Bakeshop are gorgeous and most people take home the untouched part to enjoy later! ;)

I photographed sweet Perry’s brother as a newborn back in 2014 and then this family moved to TX!  I was so sad!!  But then they recently moved back to Raleigh and I was so excited to hear back from them wanting a cake smash session for their little girl!  I was so happy to meet Perry and see her family again.  I truly love watching my clients’ families grow throughout the years.  There is nothing more special than having families come back time and time again.

Jackson Newborn – Chapel Hill Newborn Photographer

If you’re looking for a Chapel Hill Newborn Photographer and sibling/family newborn photography, you’ve come to the right place!  This gallery is a perfect example of a newborn session that includes family and sibling photographs!  Jackson turned this sweet family into a family of five!!  I typically like to make my newborns the star of the show, but I know just how incredibly important it is to have those treasured images of the entire family and the adorable and unforgettable sibling shots!  When we have a lot going on with sibling and family photos, I have my clients bring just the baby on the newborn session day and then I invite them back a few days later for a quick 30 minute family/sibling mini add on to accommodate the best conditions for great family and sibling photos.  Let’s face it, toddlers sometimes aren’t the most cooperative while having their picture taken…especially when there is a new baby in the mix – they can be even more camera shy.  Through my experience, I’ve found it’s better to start fresh and give a few more days adjustment time for siblings to get used to the newest member of their family.  Lots of practice at home gently touching babies fingers and toes and working up to holding them in a safe way (depending on age of course!), lends for a better sibling photograph in the studio.

The older the siblings are, the better they tend to do following directions around a brand new baby.  The younger ones can be a bit challenging but I have my secret ways of always grabbing at least one shot – which depending on the sibling dynamic, that can be the ultimate goal of mom and dad! ;)  Typically though, I am able to grab a few different poses with siblings that are sure to be wall art in my clients homes!  You will not want to forego the sibling photographs!!

Jackson’s first session was very challenging but mom absolutely adores her gallery that I was able to capture!  Jackson had a pretty severe case of jaundice and also had a small procedure the day before his session, so photographing him that day was a slower process than normal.  If you know me, you know I love a challenge and figuring out every baby’s personality and disposition! :)  Every baby is so different, and sometimes they can just be having a bad day.  Jackson was definitely not having the best day! lol.  But even without being able to use a paci due to his procedure, I was able to comfort him enough for a bunch of great shots.  It definitely took me a little longer to achieve the poses but I will never push my babies past what they are able or willing to do for me.  This is such an important value to have has a newborn photographer.  I have the utmost unshakeable patience for my babies – I find that many of my clients comment on this at the session but it is just second nature to me.  Our gut reactions as parents is to be alarmed at the first sound of your baby’s cry…but I have rock solid confidence when handling my precious babes that I am trusted to care for.

My goal is to make sure babies are comfortable and sleeping peacefully.  During a typical session, babies rarely cry but for a few seconds (due to gas, tummy discomfort, being hungry or wet, or just hating being naked at first! lol).  Mom had already verbalized that she was so pleased with the way the session had gone considering his unique situation and loved the photos that she had seen me take… but the perfectionist in me knew that maybe in a few days Jackson would be feeling better and I could provide more variety for her.  So I asked her to come back an hour before the sibling session with just the baby so I could try for some more variety and retake some of the images that Jackson’s wasn’t quite fully able to relax in.  Turns out, he was still not quite feeling it at the beginning of that second session but eventually, he gave into being sweetly posed in a few props and was a complete rockstar for his sibling session.  I think my solid skills in patience and baby whispering coupled with my passion for providing the most beautiful images that I am capable of for my clients, keeps them coming back to me again and again.  I love nothing more than to create images that make people cry for joy…that’s what makes this job and passion of mine so fulfilling. :)  When looking for a Chapel Hill Newborn Photographer, I hope you consider my Raleigh studio!

April Maternity – Wake Forest Maternity Photography

Photographing mamas to be makes me so incredibly happy!!  I love sharing in the joy of this time before baby arrives!  All of the planning, the excitement, the anticipation!!!!  Way too much fun!  Many of my mama’s are first timers and I love laughing with them about their pregnancy stories that they share with me!

Having your picture taken can be very intimidating for a woman no matter what their size or shape is.  But I assure you that every pregnant body deserves to be photographed!  There is beauty in all of it!!  All of my maternity clients are so different in every way – but I feel that I am incredibly skilled at capturing every detail of their beauty!

So if you’re nervous about having your maternity session photographed – I’ve got some great tips for you!  The first thing I mention to all of my maternity clients is to consider having professional hair and makeup done for your session!  I have a great studio that I refer and you have the option of having your makeup done at their salon (about 10 minutes away from my studio) or the hair and makeup artist can come to my studio immediately before your session and get you ready!  Professional hair and makeup not only takes the stress away of doing it yourself but it also ensures that you are HD camera ready!!  Their airbrushing is amazing!!!!  Most people don’t realize that to be truly camera ready, your makeup needs to be applied heavier than you normally would.  An extra bump in your natural lashes using falsies is a great way to pump up the volume and show off your gorgeous eyes and accentuate your face.  And I find that it just builds up my clients’ confidence so much that they tend to relax more during their session because they KNOW they are flawless!  Plus it’s a great excuse for you and your partner to get dressed up after the session and go somewhere special to celebrate your time together before baby arrives! <3

I absolutely adored photographing April and John!!  They were the nicest couple ever!  April brought the pink maternity dress that she is wearing in her session and I fell in love with it!  and wouldn’t you know, when I told her how much I loved it she wouldn’t let me refuse to keep it!! LOL.  How thoughtful and giving!!  I totally never expected her to tell me to keep it!  That huge gesture of kindness and giving won’t go unnoticed. ;)  I’ve recently photographed their gorgeous baby girl and I’ve got a little surprise up my sleeve for them to thank them for their generosity.

Looking for Wake Forest Maternity Photography?  You’re in the right place!!  If you loved April’s session as much as I do, we must be kindred spirits! :D I enjoy this style of maternity photography so much and encourage anyone who feels the same to book a session with me.  I would love to capture your pregnancy in this gorgeous light and style so that you can remember your amazing body at this very moment in time.  Being pregnant doesn’t always feel amazing – but your body has changed in a way that will change you forever and you’ll want to remember what it felt like to have that sweet baby in your tummy….good and sometimes not so good! ;)  The sweet flutters, gentle (and sometimes hard) baby kicks, baby hiccups in utero and even those rolling turns that make you go “whoa”!  How do you want to remember yourself pregnant?  How amazing would it be to show your sweet babe what their mama looked like carrying them in the womb?  You’ll want to share and keep these treasures forever!

2017 Photography Mentoring with Son Kissed Photography!

Each year I like to invest in at least one mentoring or educational opportunity to continue to provide the best standards for my clients. Back when my 2nd baby was due in 2014, I had started to make plans setting up a mentoring session with Kristen Mackey of Son Kissed Photography. Another fellow local photographer friend and I had planned to do a 2:1 mentoring session together…but it turned out that the dates she had available were too close to my due date for me to travel, so it didn’t work out. I have always loved her work and knew that one day I wanted to mentor with her.

Fast forward to 2016, I attended The Baby Summit in Atlanta and learned from a number of talented photographers from across the globe! It just turns out the Kristen Mackey was a teacher for a number of the sessions available and I snagged two of those classes so that I could learn from her. She is so detailed in her teaching and I knew right away after the first class that I needed to bite the bullet and invest in 2:1 mentoring with her at the first chance I could get! 2:1 mentoring means there are two photographers to one mentor – which is a great ratio considering the massive workshops that usually have about 10 attendees…all fighting for a chance to take a shot and a good spot to be able to see what’s actually happening.

I can say without a doubt that Kristen’s mentoring was well worth the investment! Not only did was the workshop itself a large investment for my business, but you have to add the flight to Tulsa, Oklahoma (which I knew would be expensive because I have family in Oklahoma City!) and other traveling expenses. Regardless, hands down worth every penny!!

When you’re entrusting someone with your newborn baby’s photos, you aren’t just trusting them to snap a picture. They are HANDLING your baby and have to be very well experienced in how to soothe, hold, position and care for your baby in the most gentle way! Most times when photographers attend workshops, they are just watching – and some of them even use the photos they take to “build their portfolio” (which is a really bad practice because they aren’t showing you what they can actually DO!).  Kristen’s workshops are the only kind that I know of where the photographer actually lets you POSE THE BABY!!!  The first day of the workshop was us learning from her while she posed 2 different babies and the second day of the workshop, me and the other attendee had free reign to practice posing the baby under Kristen’s careful supervision.  There were 2 babies the second day too and we split the time with each baby to practice whatever poses or skills we wanted to, to be sure we would be able to recreate them in our own studios before heading home.  I can’t tell you how valuable that time was!!  Kristen was right by our sides as a spotter, offering tips where she could see improvements to be made and answer any questions we had.

Even as someone who has been in business for many years – this was a little nerve wracking for me because I was so nervous to be posing in front of such a rockstar newborn photographer!  She has a very tried and true way of working with her babies and because everyone does things a little differently, it was hard to convert to some of her methods (though they worked!).  Kristen is super kind and patient and never made me feel like I didn’t know what I was doing.  I have purposefully slowed my business down the last year or so due to a highly demanding Jamberry business…so I found myself having lost a little confidence in the presence of my peers.  So silly of me – but I’m feeling super confident now that I’ve immersed myself back into my studio business.  Overall, just such a great learning experience and one that I have never experienced with any other mentor in my entire career!

In the spirit of transparency, because I’m a super honest person, I did not pose the baby on the top left of the collage above.  But I absolutely adored that new style of wrapping and I know I can surely recreate that image easily! :)  The other photos were completely posed and photographed by me on the very same equipment that I have in my own studio.  I think a lot of the difference in my current work vs. these workshop images is really in the fine details.  So overall, my personal opinion is that I feel like my work will become more polished and refined which is exactly the direction I want to go as a professional photographer.  I know that my clients will love their photos no matter how many fine details slip through the cracks (well almost! lol) but for me it’s my job to have the “eye” to know that every single detail is perfect and that I’ve created the best images in posing and lighting right down to the pinky toe details. ;)  It makes the perfectionist in me super happy!!! :D

My next client is being induced on Tuesday, so I’m so excited to welcome back my first client post-workshop and change things up a little bit!  I did a little shopping spree after my workshop, so I’ve got some new goodies to play with and offer my clients. :)
